Love Those Leprechauns !

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner!

I love my first graders because for two weeks before March 17th those pesky leprechauns would visit our room leaving green dust all over the place and chocolate gold coins. Sometimes those leprechauns would even knock over chairs or make a mess!

Here are two of my favorite read alouds I have shared with several of my classes:

Lucky O' Leprechaun by Jane Dillon
Story: During a visit to their great-aunts' house on St. Patrick's Day weekend, Meg and Sean are determined to catch the leprechaun who lives under a thorn bush in the garden. The children devise a plan with the help of the three elderly ladies. When they finally nab the little fellow, they make him promise to return once a year to answer their questions. The clever little leprechaun is hiding in some of the pictures which the kidos really love.

As a class we write our own version of a leprechaun hiding in different parts of the school. The class story is always very cute!

St. Patrick's Day in the Morning by Eve Bunting Story: The main character, Jamie, is the youngest in his family, too small to participate in the annual special parade. Disappointed, Jamie awakens early and sets out to prove them wrong. The story follows his march through the village, making music and creating a parade on his own, proving to himself that he is truly big enough to participate.

I love how this story teaches a lesson about believing in yourself! Having a class discussion about this very topic works wonderfully after sharing this book!

Happy Reading!
