Back to Work

My vacation is over and I was back to work today. That early alarm clock was TOUGH!!!

I looked at my students' papers word study reflections today. I am using a sheet that has three starter sentences on them. I am trying to get my students to think and write a quality reflection without my help. They have been spoon fed too long!!!

During the two week cycle, the students have a day when we talk about the word patterns. We look at examples and write a few ideas down in word study notebooks. This is suppose to guide them into writing a quality reflection!

.... BUT for some reason, the majority of the students have difficulty with these three starter sentences:

I sorted my words by ______ .
I have learned _______.
My word study words will help me in my reading and writing by _____.

I just do not know what else to do! The classroom teacher is also at a loss for ideas.

Any suggestions from my blog readers would be greatly appreciated!!

Just in Time !!

Happy Spring Break everyone!

My brain has been a bit overworked and not feeling very creative lately! This is a MUCH NEEDED break for me this week!

I love the kids, but some of the other aspects of my job have made me tired and happy for the time away from school! I return to work just in time to do some final test prep for a week, then there is two weeks of testing. BOO! I wish this testing craze would end. Some of it is valid, but there is just way too much - for the students and the teachers!!!!

I will enjoy reading my favorite blogs, looking at my favorite teacher websites, and spending some time relaxing!

Happy Reading!

Who are you again?

I wish there was a space on this teacher that had a name tag on it. Teachers do have a variety of titles. Teacher juggle every day! Sometimes it is exhausting, other times it is pure joy! Yesterday, one of my favorite things that happened to me!

One of my 4th grade students, who is very sweet, funny, and clever, walked up to me during the morning routine. I was VERY tired.. it had been a long week mainly because I did not sleep well ! He came up to to me to ask a question, I was sleepy and distracted.

He said "MOM" then stopped looked at me again and said, "Opps, Mrs. --- "

I looked at him and we both just cracked up. I asked, "Did you just call 'Mom'?"

He replied, "Yes, and I don't know why?" and we both cracked up again!

I always find it endearing when this happens especially with the other students. Teachers do spend a lot of time with their students. It is indirectly a compliment from the student who does it. So, in my tired state, that simple word, just perked me right up and the rest of the day seemed a breeze. I have this student to thank for that! Have you ever been called 'Mom'?

Happy Poetry Month !

In Honor of Poetry Month, here is a poem that warms my heart because I LOVE shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Closet Full of Shoes by: Shel Silverstein

Party shoes with frills and bows,

Workin’ shoes with steel toes,

Sneakers, flip-flops. And galoshes,

Brogans, oxfords, satin pumps,

Dancin’ taps and wooden clumps,

Shoes for climbin’ shoes for hikes,

Football cleats and baseball spikes,

Shoes of shiny patent leather,

Woolly shoes for winter weather,

Loafers, rough-outs, sandals, spats,

High heels, low heels, platforms, flats,

Moccasins and fins and flippers,

Shower clogs ballet slippers…

A zillion shoes and just one missin’--

That’s the one that matches this’n.

Hello April !

Did anyone fall prey to an April Fools' joke from their students? If you did, please share!

In my one classroom a 4th grade girl gave me a hug and I felt her press my back, so I knew she put a post-it on my back. It said, "Hi Everyone!!" A few girls giggled, but I pulled it off after a few minutes.

Another gal comes in early with her grandmother. She told a fellow classmate that their teacher was giving them a test on everything they had learned Thursday. The kido believed her and of course, she then said "April Fools'!"

Later in the afternoon two of my 4th grade boys that ALWAYS forget to do their word study homework came up to me and said, "I forgot my homework." I said, "Again! What am I going to do with you boys?" They yelled "April Fools!" Then they actually turned in their homework.... LOL

I am glad I made it though the day! The longer I teach, the easier April Fools' Day gets.... and hopefully next year it falls on Saturday!
