Happy New Year !

I wanted to share with you my New Year's Resolutions....

I want to take more time to read. I do it a lot in the summer, but not as much when I am teaching full time. I also want to remember to be kind, have more patience with adult (it is always easier with children for me) and do some RAK this year!

I want to post more about what I am doing the the classroom I am working in Second Grade is new to me and I have been learning something new everyday. Maybe when I return in January, I can remember to stop and take some pictures ans then blog about my days!

It's time to reflect on the year! A lot of people have been doing this for awhile. You can go link up here:

12 in 12 Linky Party

Here are 12 of my favorite things:

 12. Favorite movie you watched:
        The Hunger Games

 11. Favorite TV series:
        Big Bang Theory

 10. Favorite restaurant:

 9. Favorite new thing you tried:
This is a toughie! I tried a new class at the gym and its great, but I would not say it's my favorite new thing. Plus naming a food seems too much like gluttony. LOL. How about teaching second graders? I love it, it's new, and I hope it continues!

 8. Favorite gift you got:  This is from my Mom. It's a pen that is suppose to write for seven years, but even better is the saying because she always calls me the Grammar Police!

7. Favorite thing you pinned:

 6. Favorite blog post: This post still cracks me up!

Tuesday Funny

 5. Best accomplishment:
Getting my current job which I LOVE !!

 4. Favorite picture:  Waiting for JETS camp to start !
3. Favorite memory:
Being in California and Disney with my DH

2. Goal for 2013:
Continue at my current school. We will see what happens.

Holly Bloggy Christmas

It's time to blog about our Bloggy Exchange!

              Holly Bloggy Christmas

I was so excited when my box arrived in the mail! I just LOVE what was given to me for this exchange!

Here are a few pictures:

My love of teaching reading made this binder the perfect gift. There were different ideas included inside!
Here is one page which I think is awesome! I love the suggestion for using white labels to write notes about each student! How great is that!
What teacher doesn't love sharpies and flairs? I cant wait to use them in January!

Thanks to Rachelle from What the Teacher Wants

Merry Christmas !

It is hard to believe that my Christmas Day is already done! I hope everyone has a joyous day!

By now, all the bloggy gifts have been exchanged. I am pretty sure my bloggy friend has her gift from me! I wanted to show you what I sent her. I am not very crafty, so I gave me friend a few of my favorite things that help me get through the days!

Here they are:

Who doesn't need hand sanitizer?
Burt's Bees is SO necessary in winter.
Everyone loves a little treat. Milky Ways are my downfall!
I always need notepads and I just love colorful clips

Reward Tickets for students!
Bulletin Board Decor

The Dollar Tree is one of my favorite stores for teacher supplies! I love how they have a teacher section! There is a store right at my corner, so I stop there more than I should!

Tomorrow I will blog about the great gifts I received from the bloggy exchange!

Here Comes Santa Claus...

It's Christmas Eve. I was at the mall twice today! I helped someone shop very early. It was fun. I left and went back an hour later with my Mom to shop some more. I actually bought myself a top. I was Santa Claus to myself. We had lunch and watched the men shop.

Here's to all those kids eagerly awaiting Santa.
Prayers to all who feel a sadness this holiday season. I hope they can find hope somewhere within their hearts.

Happy Vacation!

I have had a busy December! My days were filled with math, kids telling me about where their elf on a shelf ended up each morning, and some last minute shopping. Lucky for me I do not have to shop anymore for gifts. Oh I will be at the mall on Christmas Eve.. a traditional with my Mom, but it is for fun and that's it!

I received my Bloggy GIft Exchange and was THRILLED with what was sent to me. I LOVED IT!

I hope my bloggy partner has the gift I sent and enjoyed it. I have to blog about those gifts at a later date! I am in Hallmark Movie Mode. I just love the holidays!

For now, I am happy to be on vacation for a week. I love being in second grade. I will be sad when the teacher does return from her maternity leave. I may be tired but it is a happy, content tired. I love teaching!

A nomination

A nice blogger gave me an award! She is over at Curious Firsties ! GO check out her blog. (Just click on her blog name).

She gave me "The Liebster Award" It is an award that is given by bloggers to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. It is to show new bloggers that they are appreciated and to help spread the word about new blogs.

Here are the questions she asked me:

1. What wakes you up in the morning?  This really annoying alarm. GRRR. Sometimes it's my DH.

2. Do you have a hobby that you enjoy? Swimming in the summer, reading when I can, scrapbooking after a trip.

3. Do you have a recipe that you can't live without? I make homemade banana muffins. I love to grab and go them in the AM!

4. What is your favorite movie? I have a few! I love Sleepless in Seattle, Dead Poets Society, Pretty in Pink,It's a Wonderful Life.

5. Why did you decide to start blogging? I had to make a blog for a grad school class and I never stopped after I created it!

 6. If you weren't teaching, what would you do instead? I cannot see myself doing anything else. I would love to be a writer.

7. How long have you been teaching and in what grades? I was a classroom teacher for 8 years. Then I was a substitute for a long time ( too long). I have also been a reading specialist. I currently teach grade 2 as a long term substitute.

8. What is your favorite household chore? I don't mind doing the laundry. I love to garden in the summer - I don't really see that as a chore, though.

9. What is a holiday tradition that you love to do each year? Just the whole long weekend of Thanksgiving, from eating with family to shopping with my Mom on Black Friday to tree decorating on Sat. I also love going to Christmas Eve mass with the husband,

 10. Where do you like to shop? Target, Kohl's The Loft, Ebay, Barnes and Nobles

11. What is your favorite pin on pinterest? I have a few teacher pins that I like that are related to writing ideas!

I will finish this up during my next post, when I have to nominate some bloggers! (Not enough hours in the day!)

I just started teaching Inference in the classroom. I looked on Pinterest for some clever ideas. Here is what I came up with:

I told my students they are going to be reading detectives as we read. We talked about how the clues come from the cover, the title, pictures, and the text. This coming week, I will model inference for word meanings.

I think I need to work on my chart paper writing. I love how it starts out big and gets smaller as I run out of room. LOL !

Happy Thanksgiving & Black Friday

I have been so busy. I forgot what goes into working in a classroom. It has been a wonderful time for me, but also keeping me away from blogging! I forgot how much I missed having my own room (even if I am just borrowing this one for now!)

I also hosted the in-laws for Thanksgiving. It was a success! I cooked a turkey breast and pasta for the non-turkey loving family members. I made too much food, but everyone seemed to enjoy the dinner. I also now have a new appreciation for my Gam who use to cook for 12 every year! I only had to cook for 7.

On that note, I am joining a thankful linky party.. (even if I am late)

Here's the link:  Thankful Linky Party

I am thankful for:

1. My husband!

2. My family!

3. My health
4. My home!
5. Teaching
6. Friends!

The blog's questions and answers for what I am thankful for:

1.  What are you thankful for in your classroom? The computer which is hooked up to a projection screen. I love showing videos and books on the big screen!
2. What person are you most thankful for? See above. I have more than one!
3. What 3 blogs are you most thankful for? A few second grade blogs have been my lifesaver during the last month!

Success in Second Grade
Sunny Days in Second

4. What guilty pleasure are you most thankful for? Starbucks Pumpkin Lattes
5. What are you most thankful for? The present! I have had a rough time with a few things, so right now I am just happy with the way things are right now.

After a successful Thanksgiving, I went Black Friday shopping on Friday with my Mom. We go every year. I found some great deals! I bought some holiday gifts with my coupons. I am always sad when this weekend ends because it is my favorite time of the year!  I was looking for a new top to wear to a party in December, but had no such luck. Maybe I will get a chance to go to another mall before the weekend is up.

Big News !!

I have been working in a grade 2 classroom. It has been WONDERFUL !! I want to thank all my fellow bloggers who have been sending me job dust prayers! I will be in this classroom until the end of Jan. It all happened very quickly and I am thrilled !

Here are a few pictures of lessons I did this past week.

The students researched spider facts before I arrived, so I closed the unit with a fun activity. The students made spiders and wrote the facts on their legs. Here are 2 pictures:

We are teaching editing during writing. Here are a few posters:

Students have literacy stations in the classroom. I am learning all about them. One day they were working on predictions and  I thought this was cute. I guess the student really understands sounds.

I was a reading specialist for a year, and teaching second grade is new to me! I forgot how hard being a classroom teacher is, but I am loving it !

Do you teach grammar ?

I was one of those students who loved grammar and diagramming sentences. Do students even do that anymore?? Well, this week I taught for two days in the same classroom and the teacher wanted me to teach about adjectives and how they make one's writing better. I was so excited! Yes, I am that much of a grammar geek!

I did a mini lesson on finding adjectives in sentences and then I had the students change a boring piece of writing into a more descriptive one by adding adjectives. Here are two pictures I took with my phone while teaching the lesson this week when I was subbing:

First I had students come to the chart and box off the nouns. I asked them " How do you know it's a noun?" Then I had students give me adjectives to make these nouns better. Yes,  I am a terrible speller, so please ignore my errors. LOL

The students then went to a piece of their own writing  and did the same. They really did a great job !

An Interesting Article

I just read an article about education called "The Exhaustion of the American Teacher."
If you want a good read, here you go:

As a sub (who use to work in the district where I sub) I have seen and heard a lot of complaints this year. There is a lot of transition going on in the district and several teachers are unhappy and stressed to the max!

Wake Me Up...

When September Ends!

I can't believe that October is tomorrow. I am still subbing and September is always a slow month! I had a lot of interviews this summer and no teaching job. I am wondering where my forever school is hiding!

I wish some light bulb would pop up so I knew what to do next....

On another note:

I encourage all my "sisters" to make a donation in honor of breast cancer research!

Sharing the Love...

Hello Blogger Friends!

I subbed for the first time yesterday and was able to see all my reading students from when I worked as a full time reading teacher. It is amazing to see the growth in their reading and writing skills. It is also funny because two of the kidos still have their off task, work avoidance behaviors! I had them in first grade and they are now in third. I guess kidos don't really change, they just get taller. LOL !

I am now going to share the love of a blog I recently discovered. She is a NY teacher like me! Here is her blogger button. She is planning a giveaway in the near future. : )

Go over and check her blog out!
On a lighter note! Today was 80 degrees!! I did not have to work, so I headed over to my Mom's and enjoyed the sunshine. I jumped in the pool and it was CHILLY, but still wonderful. I think tomorrow I will do the same thing and sadly, it may be my last swim for the season. BOO HOO !

Hello .....

It has been a few weeks since I have posted. I have been spending some time here:

Thanks Mom for letting me spend time at your pool!

I had some interviews, but sadly I did not get an offer. I am feeling quite frustrated and my anxiety about the whole situation is on overload! Stress City for me the past couple of days!!

On that note. It's time to say:

I am so sad to see summer go! I love the sunshine, the heat, the longer days, and the free time. Funny thing about that is Fall is my favorite season! LOL. I love the leaves changing, the cooler nights, wearing jeans and a tee-shirt, football, and pumpkin ANYTHING!

Here's to September! I always feel like it's a new beginning when fall arrives. It must be the teacher in me!

Teacher Week Linky Party

It's times for another Linky Party! If you want to join the fun go check out this blog:

Teacher Week Party at I'm Blog Hoppin

Today is Must Have Mondays! Here are mine. I am giving ones I have used the past year as a subsitute teacher. Enjoy!

Coffee. I have a thermos which I fill with coffee from my wonderful Keurig. Sometimes on a payday I treat myself to a Starbucks.

I bring a few picture books. One of my go to books is The Substitute Teacher from the Black Lagoon.

Stickers! Kidos just love stickers!! It is amazing what they will do for a sticker especially if it smells!

I also bring some cute paper so I can leave a note about the day.

I hope this helps some of those fellow substitutes out there in blog land. I also hope teachers leave a pile of these goodies for their future subs. I just love those classrooms that have substitute teacher folders with extra supplies.

Happy Reading!
