Wordless Picture Books

I love picture books! I have quite a collection! I can spends hours in Barnes and Nobles looking at books. Last night I was looking at some pictures books and was prompted to write a post about wordless pictures books. Here are a few of my favorites:

Some ways I have used wordless picture books in the classroom are to teach story elements, introduce inference, and observe character traits. I have also used them for writing lessons. I love the Mercer Mayer books ( I discovered him in college and even wrote a huge paper about him in my Children's Literature class.) I have even taken a part the books and laminated the pages to use them for narrative writing.

Who else loves wordless picture books? How do use them in the classroom?

Happy Reading~

I Love Target !

Target is my favorite store! The other day after work I went into Target for ONE thing! I needed a new pillow and it was on sale this past week! I came out of there with 5 things!! This is actually good for me! I can go crazy in that store!

I have been looking for the above bins for MONTHS! I use to have two larger ones, but they broke. Eight years of use is pretty good in my book! I stopped at their $1.00 Stop to browse - what teacher can resist that area?? In front of my eyes I saw a pile of these bins. WOO HOO! I picked out four different colors. I also bought a red one! They match perfect with the trays I bought at Target back in August!! I quickly left the area before I grabbed more things.

I headed to the pillow section, grabbed my pillow, and then stopped for a bag of chocolate on my way to the register!

THANK YOU TARGET ! How I love thee!

What Would You Do?

I had a rough day! I was in a classroom that I work in a lot! Now, I have been a teacher for awhile. I worked in my own classroom for 8 years. I have been a substitute for the past five years. I worked as a teacher assistant in grade four! I was a reading teacher for a year.

Today...... I lost it!

A student kept calling out when I was trying to help a student. I said to the child, "You are not in charge. I am." The student replied, "You are not in charge, we are." Then he laughed! I replied, "Now, I am angry!" I yelled some more.

I lost it!

I rose my voice. I yelled. The student yelled. I said, " Let's go to the office."
The student threw headphones. (Yes, they hit me in the neck) This student yelled and screamed all the way down the stairs. At one point I thing I heard, "I do not need this crap from a sub!" I walked into the office with this student following me and mouthed to the principal, " I NEED HELP!"

This student is not your average student, there is more tho the story, but in that simple minute... I feel I could have done better.

That's the problem with being a teacher... even after all my time in the classroom. I still second guess my actions, my words, my own reactions to situations!

So... what would you do?

  • I am an avid spinner! If my knee could take it, I would go every day!

  • I love swimming and wish I could swim everyday - but my Mom closes her pool for the winter LOL! I just don't like swimming indoors!

  • I have a slight show addiction. If I could I would buy a new pair every week!

  • I love sports more than my husband. People know not to call m on Sundays during Football and Nascar season!

  • I would much rather go out to eat than cook a meal. It's not that I don't like to cook, it's just that I don't like cooking for my picky eater husband!

How I Spent My Winter Break

I am joining another blog party! This one lets me find some new teacher blogs as well as see how all us teachers spent our winter vacation. Here is the original post: Linky Party Link

Here is what I did on my winter break:

    1. Shopping with Mom. We go every year on Christmas Eve. We really just grab a coffee, sit on a bench, and watch the men shop. LOL!! I did find two last minute holiday gifts for a great bargain! This year my Mom and I also went on the day after Christmas. I have never done that before! We found some great deals! I bought a new outfit since this year I did not get any clothes for Christmas!

    2. I met a teacher friend for breakfast. She teaches at my old school. I miss that place!

    3. I saw Mission Impossible 4 with the hubs. I LOVE Tom Cruise! We then went to dinner at PFChangs. YUMMY!

    4. I went to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve with the Hubs.

    5. I ate way to much Italian food and dessert on Christmas. My StepDad is a fabulous cook!

    6. I did tutor twice during the break.

    7. I read a nice Christmas story by Debbie Macomber.

    8. I watched some Christmas movies on Hallmark.

    9. I also relaxed, slept in, read a lot of new blogs, and took a few naps during my week of vacation!

It will be hard going to work. I will miss my relaxing days and nights!

    Compound Words

Many of my blog readers know I just love a certain author. I try to use her books as much as possible. Yes, it's another Laura Numeroff book!! I was looking through this book and a new idea jumped out at me!
There are several compound words in this story:

    pancake, suitcase, homesick, something
tap shoes, mailbox, backyard, tree house
    wallpaper, maple syrup

I am teaching a student to chunk words. I think showing her these compound words will be another strategy she can use to read multi- syllabic words. I am going to make some cut apart index cards to practice putting compound words together.

A wonderful thing about the words from this book is a lot of them are nouns. I plan to use the actual picture and put the two word parts in the picture than cut the picture in half for another fun practice activity. Here is an example below:
