Summer School Photos

More reading pictures from summer school. I took some more pictures.

The kids giggled during this story.
They also felt sad for the giraffe.

A cute response I found on TPT
One of my students said "I like to dance to rock -n- roll and Uptown Funk"
Six year olds are so funny!

I love this response and the illustration.

The next book I read aloud is one of my favorites:

I had kids made their own fish so I could pull kids for reading assessments.

 A cute BME sheet from
I had a small group on Thursday and asked each student this question:

One last pic to share:
The kids love fixing my mistakes!
Next week, they will have to fill in some missing letters and words.

I am so glad I was able to teacher in the summer school enrichment program. I have really enjoyed it. This will be the last week. It went by so fast! I wish I could have one more week with the kids!

Happy Reading!

Summer School !

Summer has been wonderful. Sure it has rained here, but I still have had my sun and pool time as much as possible. I am enjoying my back patio as I type this!

I have been working in the summer program and it has been nice to teach without all the common core rules. It reminds me of my younger teacher days when we could choose read alouds and were trusted to do what was right for the kids. Sure - having accountability is good - BUT there are a lot of good teaching practices that no longer exist in the classroom. SO SAD! Reading aloud is crucial and a lot of teachers in NY are no longer allowed to even do that ! Lucky for me, I have been able to do it a lot in summer school!!

Here are a few cute pictures from my summer school lessons:

I love these books:

After a read aloud, the kidos did some writing with a prompt:
Here is a cute example from one of the kidos:

Here is the second read aloud from last week:
I just love how this kidos added a disco ball!

Here are two books I read, too:

Here is a sample of a kidos response.
So cute !

I also teach math. This coming week we are working on the word "greater." Both of my groups - the K kids and the first graders need the practice. Here are two pictures from the chart I made last week:

I also have to work on solving word problems with the kids. Each kido was given a word problem on a 1/2 sheet of paper. The kids a great job with addition, so I moved onto subtraction. We read it aloud and then circled the important parts - the numbers and the word "left." We also talked about the label for the number sentence. It floors me that you have to use the word equation with first grades! Here is my teaching example:

There has been a lot going on in summer school and I am loving it! It is a nice change from teaching reading all day!

This week we will be reading some more fun books! I can't wait to post them for you!

Happy reading!

Target Dollar Spot

I have been seeing some awesome posts about Target finds, so I had to go check out my local Target....  I actually went to TWO Targets last week. SHHH!

First here is why my husband won't go to Target with me:

He sent me this picture from Facebook and I could not stop laughing! I said,       "Yep, this is why I am in Target for two hours sometimes."  It's one of my happy places. Below are some of the things I bought for school!

Perfect for me since I teach reading!

I know I can find a use for these !
I can't wait to hang this somewhere!

I found four of these cute books!

I actually used the name take the first day of summer school!
I am sure I can think of a bulletin board theme for the speech bubbles.

I opened a few of these to use in a reading group week.

I can't wait to play this game with the kids in the fall!

Happy Reading ! Happy Target Shopping, too!

Sunday Rewind

I started the summer school enrichment program last week. I forgot what it is like to have kids that just left K and 1st. They are so sweet, young, and need a lot of reminders.

Every day I do this:
The students circle certain words, look for a mistake or two, and then I let a kido take it home.

One thing the kidos need help practicing is solving a word problem. We did a few different things.

Here is another example. I let the kids do the work for practice.

I also made a template for the kids,  so they could see the similarities

When I am not thinking about teaching I have been doing this:
I have been reading when I can. I read two books so far - both were really good. I am now reading a young adult book: Finding Audrey by Sophia Kinsella. It's pretty funny so far!

I will post a few more pictures after I teach this week! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Happy Reading!

HAPPY JULY and Currently

It's that time again!

Big Brother is my guilty pleasure in the summer.
It's summer which means more time to read and relax.
It may be summer - but it is raining, raining, and raining! Where's the sunshine?
Where's my summer heat? After this past winter, I am tired of colder weather!
I am reading about teaching K kids for my summer enrichment program, but have not really gathered materials yet.

I am an ALL-STAR with books. I love to read and remember what I read. I never has to study for my English finals. I also like to recommend books to friends and students. I am All-Star at being a book nerd (I would hope so since I teach reading.)

Now everyone go read some more Currently posts!

Happy Reading!
